Setting up prospecting and updating plays in Play Builder

Last updated: May 4, 2026

This guide covers how to configure prospecting actions in your plays and update existing plays with new audience settings.

Setting Up New People Prospecting

To add prospecting functionality to your play:

  1. In the Play Builder, drag the 'Prospect for People' action from the action list into your play sequence

  2. In the configuration panel, disable the 'Include existing people' option to focus on discovering new prospects rather than targeting contacts already in your system

  3. Set the maximum number of prospects per company (recommended range: 2-4 prospects) to control your outreach volume

  4. Select and order your target personas based on your preference for outreach priority

Why Prospect for New People

Prospecting for new people rather than using existing CRM contacts offers several advantages:

  • Ensures you're reaching current, valid email addresses instead of potentially outdated contact information

  • Focuses your efforts on discovering fresh prospects at target companies

  • Helps expand your reach beyond your existing database

Updating Existing Plays

You can modify existing plays without creating duplicates:

  1. Open the play you want to update in Play Builder

  2. Navigate to the play settings

  3. Update the audience field with your newly created audience

  4. Save your changes

  5. Republish the play

Understanding Play Republishing Behavior

When you republish a play with updated audience settings, the system handles enrollment as follows:

  • Existing enrolled companies: Companies from the previous audience that are already enrolled will continue their existing sequence normally without interruption

  • New companies: Companies from the updated audience will be enrolled automatically and start the sequence from the beginning

This behavior ensures continuity for ongoing sequences while allowing you to expand your reach with new audience criteria.

Re-enrolling Previously Blocked Contacts

If contacts weren't enrolled when a play ran (e.g., because they'd been enrolled before and the play is set to "run once," or they were in another active sequence), you have a few options:

Option 1: Adjust the play's re-run settings (recommended)
If the block is due to the play's retrigger/re-run interval, go to play settings and update the interval. On the next run, contacts who were previously skipped will be picked up automatically — without re-running enrichment on contacts who were already processed.

Option 2: Enroll directly into the sequence
If you don't need the play's enrichment or agent steps to run again (because research was already done), enroll contacts directly:

  1. Go to Sequences → select the relevant sequence → Enrollments

  2. Click "Add enrollments" and select the contacts manually or via a filter
This bypasses the play entirely — no enrichment credits are consumed.

Option 3: Duplicate the play
Duplicating a play creates a fresh copy that treats all matching contacts as new — it will re-run every node, including enrichment and AI research steps.

Cost warning: If your play includes agent research or enrichment nodes, cloning it will re-consume credits for every contact in the audience. For plays with large audiences or expensive research nodes, this can add up significantly. Use Options 1 or 2 first unless you specifically need fresh enrichment data.
