Troubleshooting New Hire Tracking: Setup and Common Issues

Last updated: May 5, 2026

New Hire Tracking helps you identify prospects who have recently changed jobs at companies in your target market. If you're experiencing issues with visibility, zero results, or lower than expected volume, this guide will help you diagnose and resolve common problems.

Prerequisites: Configure New Hire Tracking Settings

Before creating any New Hire plays, you must first properly configure New Hire Tracking in your workspace settings. Without this setup, your plays will show zero prospects regardless of your criteria.

To configure New Hire Tracking:

  1. Navigate to Settings > New Hire Tracking

  2. Enable "Find New Hires at existing Companies in Unify"

  3. Choose your company tracking scope: You can select either "Find New Hires at existing Companies in Unify" OR "Find new hires at companies that don't exist in Unify" - you don't need both enabled. The option to find new hires at companies "that don't exist in Unify" will still surface new hires at both new and existing companies that match your filters.

  4. Set broad criteria for company matching (e.g., if company exists in your CRM or Unify)

  5. Verify that your settings show more than 0 people counted as 'New Hires'

Understanding Sample Sizes and Results

When viewing your New Hire plays, it's important to understand what the numbers represent:

  • The 'total' number (e.g., '3,679 total') represents the full audience available to that play before any filters are applied

  • For New Hire plays specifically, this is all new-hire records that Unify can evaluate for your workspace, not everyone in your CRM

  • New Hire tracking brings in net-new prospects who changed jobs recently, then your play filters narrow that total with your specific criteria

Important System Limitations

Understanding these limitations will help set proper expectations:

  • Net-new hires only: New Hire Tracking only detects net-new hires from external data sources who started within the last 90 days

  • No retroactive flagging: The system will NOT retroactively flag existing CRM contacts when they change jobs within the same company

  • External data dependency: The system relies on external data providers, so some discrepancies may occur

Troubleshooting Zero Results

If your New Hire play shows zero prospects, follow these steps:

  1. Check your New Hire Tracking settings: Go to Settings > New Hire Tracking and confirm people are being counted as 'New Hires'

  2. Verify your tracking scope setting: Ensure at least one tracking option is enabled in Settings > New Hire Tracking. Remember that enabling "Find new hires at companies that don't exist in Unify" will include both new and existing companies.

  3. Review company matching criteria and filters: Ensure your personas/filters (job titles, industry, company size, geography) aren't too narrow. Consider broadening your criteria to increase volume.

  4. Verify CRM integration: Confirm your CRM integration is properly connected and syncing

  5. Remember the limitation: Only net-new hires from external sources will be detected, not existing contacts

Setting Up Multiple Tracking Configurations

You can create multiple New Hire plays with different criteria to target various segments:

  • Create separate plays for different company types or industries

  • Use different job title filters for various roles you're targeting

  • Apply different geographic or company size filters as needed

Each play will draw from the same pool of new hire data but apply your specific filters to narrow the results.

Note: If you're still experiencing issues after following these steps, ensure your workspace has the New Hire Tracking feature enabled and that your data sources are properly configured.
