Why are sequence-level and email-level opt-out rates different?

Last updated: April 8, 2025

Context

When viewing email sequence statistics, you may notice a discrepancy between the overall sequence opt-out rate and individual email opt-out rates. For example, a sequence might show a 9.5% overall opt-out rate while each individual email step displays 0% opt-out rate.

Answer

The difference in opt-out rates occurs because sequence-level and email-level statistics are calculated differently:

  • Sequence-level opt-out rate: Shows the total opt-out percentage across all versions of the sequence

  • Email-level opt-out rate: Displays opt-out data only for the current version of that specific email step

For example, if you're viewing Version 4 of a sequence and all opt-outs occurred in earlier versions, you might see:

  • A 9% overall opt-out rate at the sequence level (including all historical versions)

  • 0% opt-out rates for individual emails (showing only Version 4 data)

Currently, there is no way to view per-email opt-out rates across all versions of a sequence. This functionality has been noted as a potential future improvement.
