Can I reference a contact's previous company name in champion tracking sequences?
Last updated: March 3, 2026
Context
When creating sequences for champion tracking, users often want to personalize their outreach by referencing both a contact's current and previous company. This is particularly relevant for scenarios where you want to acknowledge a champion's prior experience with your product at their previous company.
Answer
Currently, it is not possible to directly reference a contact's previous company name as a variable in sequences. While Unify tracks job changes and maintains this information, the previous company name is not available as a merge field in sequence templates.
There are two recommended approaches for handling this limitation:
Important: Unify uses your CRM as the source of truth for contact information. If you need to correct a contact's current role or company information, update the contact's job title or company directly in your CRM (Salesforce or HubSpot). Unify will automatically pick up these changes on the next sync.
Option 1: Modify your messaging
The recommended approach is to adjust your email copy to focus on the new company instead of referencing the previous company. For example:
Use "Congratulations on your move to {New Company Name}!" instead of referencing the previous company
Focus on their new role and opportunities rather than their past experience
Option 2: Manual workaround (for specific cases)
If you absolutely need to reference previous company information, you can:
Export champion tracking data to CSV (including old and new company details)
Upload this data to your CRM as a custom field (or update existing contact fields if correcting current information)
Use the custom CRM field as a variable in your sequences
Note: The manual workaround requires additional maintenance and may not be scalable for large numbers of contacts.
